The Lost Acorn, by Dola Spering (C) 2009 |
Once upon a time, there stood an oak tree in a majestic forest. She was a very happy oak tree, with many family and friends around her. Although she was a modest oak tree, she took pride in her little acorns and watching them grow up, strong and tall. Her dreams for them were her life. The oak tree could not imagine her life as anything other than what it was – perfect. |
One night, while she nurtured her littlest acorn, a horrible storm came through the forest. Before she could realize the danger, her little acorn was gone. The storm was over as quickly as it had begun, but her acorn was nowhere to be found. She called for him, but there was no answer. Her eyes frantically searched the forest but to no avail. Her littlest acorn was lost, gone forever. The storm had taken him away. |
Her heart ached without her littlest acorn: in the very core of her being, she was missing something. Eventually, as time passed, she learned to be happy again. But, always in her heart, there was a great sadness. As her life went on, she knew joy. She knew the wonders of the forest and all that it had in store for her. She did her best to make the forest a better place. But always, her lost acorn haunted her. What might he have become? How could she let him slip away so easily? Why hadn’t she protected him? Why wasn’t she able to keep him safe? |
| Now every oak tree has a special time to meet with God, and as her time was approaching, she looked back upon her life; but for that one storm, her life had been exactly as she imagined it – perfect. So, she waited patiently for her appointment with God. When she finally got to meet with Him, she talked lovingly of her forest and all the friends and family she had around her. She told him she had no regrets. However, there was one thing she could never understand, she said. She wondered how a loving God could allow her to lose something so precious, so close to her heart. | ||
| God told her that He wanted to show her something, something He had been waiting so long to show her. He took her to a place, a quiet, lovely place. In the middle of this strange place, so far away from the forest she called her home, stood a majestic oak tree. It was by far the most majestic oak she had ever seen. His branches were strong and sturdy. His leaves were wide and the most beautiful shade of green she had ever seen. In one of his twigs laid a nest filled with baby birds, lovingly cared for by their mother. She noticed a family of squirrels was living in the tree as well. She watched as butterflies fluttered from branch to branch. This tree was home to so many. It held so much love and tenderness within its majesty. | ||
She turned to God and said, “This surely is a lovely tree; the most majestic I have seen. But I do not understand why you have brought me here.” God smiled, “Don’t you see, this majestic oak is your lost acorn. And I’m sure he is just as you imagined him – perfect. You may have lost him, but I never did.” |
