With One Breath (C) 2008

Don’t Pretend (C) 2008

I never got to see you smile

But I always smile when I think of you.

I gazed into your eyes just once,

Though only in a dream, it’s true.

There is so much in this I don’t understand –

How can there be death without life and birth?

I promise to keep you alive in my heart

And to prove to the world what you’re worth.

A love this strong is nothing short of a miracle –

Stronger than pain, despair, even death.

You’re worth all my heart and my soul, even though,

I said “Hello” and “Goodbye” with one breath.

I know I will hold you in my arms again

And then we’ll never have to be apart.

Even though I never got to meet you,

I know you in the depths of my heart.

You taught me how to live – through hope

And that a rainbow needs the rain.

You have brought me peace and joy –

There is beauty within the pain.

Don’t pretend he didn’t exist,

Just because he is not here.

His brief life changed mine forever.

My heart will always hold him near.

Don’t pretend he didn’t exist;

He has taught me oh so much.

My life is much richer now

Because I felt his touch.

Don’t pretend he didn’t exist

Just because he said goodbye.

He is as real as the breath I breathe

And this teardrop in my eye.

Don’t pretend he didn’t exist.

I still miss him so.

I never got to hold him,

But I’ll never let him go.

Don’t pretend he didn’t exist.

My love for him is real.

And though my heart is hurting,

Someday my heart will heal.

Although my arms are empty now,

They will not always be.

My son waits at Heaven’s gates

And watches over me.
